The East-Asian Camellia belongs to the family of Theaceae, flowering between January and March/April.
The shrub or tree reaches from 1.5 up to 6 (rarely 11) meter. Some Chinese camellia are thought to be 100 years old.
Mutations can appear on single branches and persist if newly cultivated from this particular branch. The mutations affect blossom shape, color or kind of leaves.
In Japan (tsubaki, 椿) it has a special symbolic meaning: Since the petals are lost singularly when still snow lies, it looks like blooddrops. Therefore the camellia is symbol for death and momentariness.
Other symbolic meanings especially of the simple blossom species is friendship, elegant and harmony.
The pictures shown here were taken with friendly permission of our very friendly neighbor, who has all right to be proud cultivating such a beauty in her garden! :-)
